PRETORIA - The 5th International Conference on Tax in Africa (ICTA) hosted by the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) kicked off on Wednesday 03 November 2021.

Over 1600 delegates from more than 47 different countries registered for the gathering that has now become the ultimate biennial rendezvous of tax officials and practitioners from Africa and beyond.

This biennial tax conference which brings together tax experts from the public and private sectors, academia and civil society to exchange on topical tax issues as chosen as a theme for this year “Domestic Resource Mobilisation: Accelerating Technology for Tax Administrations”.

It will be held over three days (3 - 5 November) during which topics such as the Digitalisation of tax administrations, the use of blockchain, big data and other technological innovations in the modernisation of Tax administrations will be unpacked.

According to the Executive Secretary of ATAF, Mr Logan Wort, "The discussion on accelerating technology for effective revenue mobilisation, couldn’t have come at a better time because in the past two years, to remain afloat tax administrations in Africa and across the World had to innovate to sustain business continuity despite being under lockdowns and reduced economic activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic".

This sentiment was reiterated by the Chairman of ATAF, Mr Philippe Tchodie and the Keynote speaker to the conference, Prof. Kevin URAMA, Chief Economist and Vice President for Economic Governance and Knowledge Management Complex African Development Bank.

In their views, the basis of an effective and efficient tax system in the 21st century is in technology and the digitisation of the tax collection process.

Besides the outcome statement expected at the conclusion of the Conference, participants are set to learn from each others' experiences, explore novel solutions to the challenges of modernising tax administrations and ultimately, use the lessons learnt to set their administrations on the right path towards digitisation and ICT reforms.
