The African Tax Administration Forum is marking the first decade of our existence by hosting a number of regional events across the continent throughout the year. The events aim to highlight the organisation’s work and celebrate our many achievements since our inception in 2009. At the events we will also be forward looking, mapping the way for ATAF’s next 10 years.
The regional events will build up to ATAF’s main celebration which fittingly will be hosted in Kampala, Uganda, the city where ATAF was launched. In the course of the year, as we travel on the road back to Kampala, we will share some of the significant milestones in the organisation’s journey since 2009.

In the beginning…

In 2008, in the wake of the worst financial and economic crisis that rocked the world since the 1930s, the level of aid and foreign direct investment to the developing world, including Africa, fell significantly. A number of African countries realised the need to lessen reliance on overseas aid and for African states to take control of the continent’s development themselves through the mobilisation of domestic resources.

Critical to the successful mobilisation of domestic resources is a functional state with efficient administrative systems and good governance and an effective tax system. Read More...

10 YEARS OF IMPACT ON THE AFRICAN AND INTERNATIONAL TAX LANDSCAPES…AND COUNTING

From 25 in 2009 to 38 Members in 2019

From 25 Members at the time of its inauguration in November 2019, ATAF has gained significant ground in terms of its Membership. The organisation now counts 38 active members from all 5 sub-regions of Africa. This figure is set to increase further in the coming years as ATAF continues to assert itself as the African voice on tax matters.

African Tax Outlook (ATO) the most comprehensive Tax statistics publication on the continent

The African Tax Outlook, ATAF’s flagship publication has become the reference book for policymakers and other stakeholders in Africa and beyond. The review was launched with only 13 participating countries and now boasts 38 countries, which annually contribute data to the project.

Over USD 190 Million raised in additional tax revenues as a result of ATAF’s Technical Assistance

ATAF’s technical assistance initiatives have considerably helped boost the revenue of our members across the continent. Our revenue Authorities report an excess of USD 190 million in additional revenues collected.
Some have even reported record-breaking figures such as USD 110 million collected from audits in 2 years only and USD 10 million collected from a single transfer pricing audit, as a result of ATAF’s interventions.

New Transfer Pricing Laws and regulations enacted

We have helped and continue to help African countries redraft and amend their tax legislations in order to improve tax certainty, increase collection figures, meet international standards and ultimately, increase Domestic Resource Mobilisation. As a result of these efforts, new transfer pricing laws and regulations have been enacted in more than 12 countries (including Zambia, Uganda, Senegal, Botswana, Kenya, Nigeria etc.) based on ATAF Suggested Approach to TP Legislations
