ATAF hosts Financial Crime Investigation course for African tax officials
The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of tax officials to detect, investigate, and prosecute financial crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, and illicit financial flows. It focused on practical approaches to financial crime investigation within the tax context.
From 7–11 April 2025, ATAF hosted the Certified Financial Crime Investigators Course in Pretoria, South Africa. The course was attended by 27 participants from 11 member countries.
The training aimed to strengthen the capacity of tax officials to detect, investigate, and prosecute financial crimes such as tax evasion, money laundering, and illicit financial flows. It focused on practical approaches to financial crime investigation within the tax context.
Participants were trained on:
• The latest methodologies for detecting and investigating financial crimes
• Best practices in intelligence gathering and forensic auditing
• Strategies for prosecuting tax-related offences
• Regional and international frameworks for combating financial crime
Opening the workshop, ATAF Manager: Tax Academy, Ms Caroline Mutayabarwa, highlighted the importance of building investigation skills within tax administrations. She noted that strengthening enforcement capacity is key to reducing revenue losses and improving tax compliance across the continent.
The course supports ATAF’s broader objective to enhance the effectiveness of member tax administrations in tackling financial crime and protecting domestic revenue.
