CAPE TOWN - In the Opening Session, Mr Logan Wort (Executive Secretary, ATAF), Ms Fabrizia Lapecorella (Deputy Secretary-General, OECD) and Mr Edward Kieswetter (Commissioner, South African Revenue Service) delivered opening remarks to conference delegates. The financing gap in Africa is close to USD 200 billion annually, meaning more must be done to fast-track the implementation of existing resolutions and recommendations. Dr Phillipe Tchodie (Chairman, ATAF Executive Council) and H.E. Amb Albert Muchanga delivered welcome messages through pre-recorded videos. Various activities are happening in the global tax arena, directly impacting Africa's ability to collect additional revenues while combatting IFFs. The MoU between ATAF and the African Union Commission will ensure that the nexus between tax policy and administration is achieved while creating the necessary awareness among political principles of the ongoing reforms, including the United Nations Secretary General's Report on Effective and Inclusive International Tax Cooperation.
The 2023 ATAF Annual Meeting attracted over 406 officials from Ministries of Finance and African Tax Administrations of 42 African Union (AU) member states, Members of Parliament, Development Partners, other key partners, individual tax policy experts and private sector players. The Annual Meeting took place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 31 October - 2 November 2023, hosted by the South Africa Revenue Services under the theme "Africa Rising: Sustainable Growth through Revenue Mobilisation".
